We're excited you will be making the trip out to Wurtsboro! While we can't wait to celebrate together, we know you might want to explore a bit while you're in New York. Here are some ideas.
Exploring the Outdoors
The hiking in this area is great. Right in Wurtsboro, the D&H Canal trail is a flat, easy 3.5-mile path along the old canal - perfect for a morning walk or bike ride.
If you want something more challenging, Sam's Point (about 30 minutes away) has ice caves you can walk through and a 187-foot waterfall called Verkeerderkill Falls. The ice caves stay around 55 degrees year-round. The full hike is about 7 miles and takes 3-4 hours, but you can do shorter sections. Just note - you need to reserve parking on weekends and holidays from mid-April through mid-November.
If you're interested in water activities, there's rafting and tubing on the Delaware River about 30 minutes away.
History & Culture
The 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Fair actually happened in Sullivan County (30 minutes from Wurtsboro), not in Woodstock, NY.
The Museum at Bethel Woods has over 6,000 square feet of exhibits about the festival and 1960s culture, with artifacts, footage, and personal stories from the event. There's a monument on the field where about 400,000 people gathered for three days. The site also hosts concerts at its amphitheater throughout the year.
If you are into fishing, you might be interested in checking out the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum in Livingston Manor.
Taking In Some Art
Storm King Art Center is one of the world's leading sculpture parks, with over 100 works spread across 500 acres of rolling hills and fields. It's about 45 minutes from Wurtsboro.
The outdoor museum features large-scale sculptures and site-specific installations by artists like Alexander Calder, Maya Lin, Mark di Suvero, and Andy Goldsworthy. You can walk or bike through the grounds - there are 5+ miles of trails connecting different installations.
Spending Some Time In NYC
The weekend events will only be about 90 minutes from New York City, making it easy to spend a few days there either before or after. Whether you want to see a show, hit up museums, explore neighborhoods, or just eat your way through the city, it's an easy addition to the trip.
